Cathedral of the Transfiguration
The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Savior is the main church of the monastery of St. Euphimius. It was built in 1582 - 1594, in the traditions of white stone architecture of Suzdal. It is monumental and austere. The massive five-domed construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral is encircled by a frieze of figures and pillars. The most outstanding feature of it is frescoes created by a team of painters from Kostroma, led by the renowned icon painter of the time Gury Nikitin who also had painted before cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin, temples of Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Rostov.
The St. Euphimius Monastery is one of the largest museum ensembles of the city. The monastery was founded in the 14th century on the northern outskirts of Suzdal by Boris Konstantinovich. It was built as a fortress to defend the town from all the enemies - both external and internal.
