St. Nicholas on the Bersenievka

St. Nicholas on the Bersenievka

This beautiful church is about 350 years old. It is located on the small ireland on the Bersenievskaya Embankenment, on the other side of the Moscow-River from the Moscow Kremlin. The rumors says that in the middle of 17th century they built a tunnel undergraund, at least 500 meters under the river, between this church and the Kremlin. This church and place have very interesting history.

In 1656, the prominent Moscow official Averkii Kirillov replaced a wooden Church of St. Nicholas on his urban estate fronting the Moscow River with a brick church dedicated to the Trinity, but persistently known as the Church of St. Nicholas on Bersenevka. Completed the following year, the church was attached to a rare example of 17th century brick domestic architecture in Moscow. That structure was subsequently much rebuilt, as were ancillary parts of the church, but the central part has been well restored, particularly the roof.

We recently enjoyed four days in Moscow. Although we are very independant travellers and had done a great deal of reading we were very pleased to have the additional assistance of Arthur while he coped with the Moscow traffic and also his assistance in getting us to and aboard the train to St Petersburg. We had a marvelous driving tour of Moscow by night with Arthur before boarding the train at midnight. We highly recommend Arthur's services.
