Tower of Kazan Cathedral
The original Kazan Cathedral was built in 1636 with money donated by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky in honor of the miracle - working Kazan icon of the mother of God .
Unfortunately, like a lot of the churches in Moscow, the Cathedral was destroyed by the Bolsheviks, ironically on the very same day in 1936 that the church was meant to celebrate its 300th anniversary. The church was reconstructed in 1993 on the celebration day of the Icon of Kazan and has been hosting regular services ever since.
Today, Kazan Cathedral boasts a pink and white exterior replete with the ornate window frames and gables characteristic of early Muscovite church architecture, and crowned by a cluster of green and gold domes.

I contacted Arthur as recommended by a user on the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum. My nephew and I had a 9 hour layover at Moscow's Sheremetyevo 2 airport while traveling from a primary vacation in the Middle East. We preferred to tour Moscow rather than sit at the airport for 9 hours. I arranged for Arthur to pick me up at the airport and provide a quick tour of the major attractions. I realized this was risky given Moscow's notorious traffic problems. Our flight landed an hour late in Moscow. I called Arthur while still on the plane on the runway ready to cancel the arrangements because of the late arrival. However, he convinced me that we still had enough time. He took back roads into Moscow to avoid the horrendous freeway traffic and was still able to provide us with a two hour + walking tour of the Red Square/Kremlin area with a quick Metro tour thrown in. Arthur definitely knows the city well--both from a historical and navigational standpoint. I am glad he convinced me to leave the airport--the short tour was definitely a highlight of our week. I would definitely use him again and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a driver and/or tour guide in Moscow.
